The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) concluded in Shanghai on July 20. With the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future,” the conference witnessed the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, becoming an important milestone in the history of artificial intelligence development.
Nicholas B. DIRKS, Co-Chair of the International Advisory Board of the Center forGlobal AI Innovative Governance and President and CEO of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), said in an interview with CCTV Finance that communication is aimed at reaching consensus on certain issues, such as global governance and global principles for the use and development of science and technology. He noted that China’s progress is deeply encouraging.

Jason Slater, Chief of Division for Digital Transformation and AI at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, said that the conference’s proposal to provide 5000 AI-focused training opportunities for developing countries is highly aligned with UNIDO’s objectives, along with the AI+ initiative. During the window of opportunity for AI development, if the world wants to ensure that certain countries are not left behind, it is necessary to establish clear and strong governance mechanisms.

Liu Yuanchun, President of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, said that this conference provided a comprehensive presentation and in-depth discussion from multiple perspectives, including technology, the AI industrial chain, supply chain, and value chain. It has provided a new platform and opened up a new chapter for jointly advancing AI development and AI governance from a global perspective.
At this year’s conference, the newly established World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization became a major focus of discussion among various parties. Several major documents released alongside the conference, including the action plan on artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation and development and the International Artificial Intelligence Ethics Governance Action Plan, also contributed China’s solutions and wisdom to building a new global cooperation framework featuring inclusive access to AI computing power, data sharing, and joint ethical governance.
