Thematic Meeting of the Group of Friends on International Cooperation in AI Capacity Building Held at UN Headquarters

A thematic meeting of the Group of Friends on International Cooperation in AI Capacity Building was held at the United Nations Headquarters. The meeting was co-chaired by Ambassador Fu Cong, Permanent Representative of China to the UN, and Chola Milambo, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. Chen Jiachang, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Luo Hui, Member of the Leading Party Members Group of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and Amandeep Singh Gill, the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, attended and delivered speeches. More than 120 representatives from over 50 countries and international organizations participated in the event.

Ambassador Fu Cong noted that since its establishment more than two years ago, the Group of Friends of AI has actively promoted digital transformation and capacity building through pragmatic project cooperation. China will continue to adhere to a people-centered approach, champion multilateralism, and strive for tangible results to ensure that artificial intelligence remains inclusive and beneficial to the entire world.

Vice Minister Chen Jiachang stated that China remains committed to an open-source and open path for AI innovation, accelerating efforts to build an inclusive global innovation ecosystem, and building a platform for exchanges and mutual learning within the international community.

Luo Hui expressed that CAST is willing to work with all parties to jointly foster an open, diverse, and mutually beneficial ecosystem for AI capacity building, thereby empowering the Global South to participate more equally in the development of AI.

Ambassador Chola Milambo emphasized the need to promote inclusivity and equity in AI to better serve the developmental priorities of the Global South. Amandeep Singh Gill called for the establishment of three major pillars—policy, science, and capacity building—in international AI cooperation.

During the meeting, Chinese and foreign experts shared cutting-edge achievements and practical experiences in leveraging AI to empower engineering capabilities, deep-space computing, and international cooperation. Representatives from various countries spoke enthusiastically, highly commending the active role of the Group of Friends in the field of AI capacity building. They expressed hopes to further establish cooperation frameworks and adopt practical measures to ensure that AI serves the benefit of all humanity.
